I got a rtl8723be on ubuntu 16.03 running. Wifi dropped every few minutes forcing, I had to re-select the used wifi to force a reconnection. But that's not a solution, so I started to investigate/google around and got the solution here and there.

The solutions is (or better seems as I did not test it yet for a longer time) to add some additional options to the drivers modprobe file.

  • edit the file /etc/modprobe.d/rtl8723be.conf and add the following content
#Prevents the WiFi card from automatically sleeping and halting connection
    options rtl8723be fwlps=0 swlps=0

I used some more options I found on other pages:

options rtl8723be fwlps=0 swlps=0 ips=0 swenc=1

After that undload the file (using modprobe -r) and reload it (using modprobe) or just reboot the machine.

...seems to work like a charm.
